Middlesbrough transfer news continues as the club move closer to their third January signing. Jeremy Sarmiento has completed his medical after Middlesbrough agreed a deal with Brighton.

The 23-year-old forward is set to join Boro on an initial loan deal, which includes an obligation to buy in the summer for a fee of £3.2 million plus performance-related add-ons. The Ecuador international is expected to be officially unveiled early next week.

Jeremy Sarmiento Medical Completed Ahead of Boro Move

Sarmiento completed his medical on Sunday and could make his Middlesbrough debut next weekend when Boro face Norwich City. Once the move becomes permanent in the summer, his contract is expected to run until 2030.
The deal brings an end to a month-long transfer saga between Middlesbrough and Brighton. Talks had stalled earlier in January, with Boro temporarily walking away from negotiations before re-entering discussions amid interest from Birmingham City, who attempted to hijack the move.

Why Middlesbrough Won the Race for Sarmiento

Despite late competition, Sarmiento is understood to have always preferred a move to Middlesbrough, having been convinced by the club’s long-term project under head coach Kim Hellberg. While a £3.2m fee was agreed in principle last week, complications over the payment structure delayed the deal.

A loan-with-obligation agreement has now been settled, allowing Boro to defer payments to a future financial period. This structure could benefit the club should they secure Premier League promotion, or generate funds through future player sales.

Promotion Experience a Major Boost for Boro

Sarmiento arrives to strengthen Middlesbrough’s attacking options as they push for promotion. The winger has achieved promotion in each of the last two seasons, with Ipswich Town and Burnley, and is expected to provide decisive moments during the run-in.

He spent the first half of the season on loan at Cremonese in Serie A, making seven appearances. Brighton will now recall him from Italy to complete the move to the Riverside Stadium.

Middlesbrough will hope the Ecuadorian can once again play a key role as they aim to secure promotion from the Championship.
